$70,000 to $100

Post by tma »

Norco is 8, and a very sweet and handsome boy. He is also a very talented horse, having raced 30 times in his career and earned $70,000 on the racetrack with 8 wins, 5 placings, and 5 show finishes.

Then two years after his final official race, in 2012 he was deposited at a low end livestock auction, where he sold to a feedlot for $100.

Emergency donations were received by the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, allowing volunteers to negotiate the purchase of Norco from the feedlot to remove him from the threat of shipping out of state, to slaughter.

Seriously neglected, very thin and incredibly hungry when he arrived at SCTR, his 30 day quarantine began along with his rehabilitation. These photos were taken several days later, after he had already gained quite a bit of weight, and had farrier and vet care, a bath and more.

Unfortunately he then became ill with a virus (likely contracted at the feedlot) and a secondary infection. His fever rose, and he lost some of that precious weight.

With constant care, Norco finally recovered from the virus, and began to thrive.

Several months later, he was sufficiently recovered to be offered for adoption, and he immediately found his "forever" human in one of the donors that contributed to his original rescue and care.

These photos were taken just before leaving the Rescue for his new home.

He now enjoys his new loving home, and a new equine buddy.

The rescue of Norco was possible due to the efforts of the volunteers of the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, and the supporters who donated the necessary funds for the purchase and his rehabilitation.

"SCTR" ( http://www.sctbrescue.org ) is an all volunteer run registered charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, re-training, re-homing or retirement of Thoroughbred horses that are at risk of neglect, abuse or shipment out of state to slaughter. Many of the Thoroughbreds they rescue are found in poor and depressed condition, requiring extensive rehabilitation prior to adoption. They are driven by the philosophy that all of the horses in their program, whether they ever raced, whether they raced competitively or not, whether they were successful or not in the breeding shed, and no matter what their condition when they are rescued - they are "Still Winners".
