On a September day in 2013, a 2003 model mare was presented at a low end auction.

Cymple Rhythm, a former racehorse, was severely malnourished and had multiple cuts on her body. This added up to the mare being at highest risk for purchase for possible shipment out of state for slaughter.

Despite her starved condition, this mare was actually saddled and ridden in the auction ring.

Fortunately for Cymple Rhythm, there were volunteers at the auction that day, to try to prevent her selling to a buyer who would ship her, entering the slaughter pipeline.

The cost to give her another chance at life? An auction price of $100 plus transport costs, she found a soft landing with the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue. Supporters of the rescue stepped up to contribute to the rescue and subsequent care for this mare.

In addition to her clearly malnourished condition and her obvious wounds, her intake examination by a veterinarian determined that Cymple Rhythm had approximately 30 pounds of sand in her digestive tract.

Rescue volunteers began the careful "re-feeding" process, since a severely starved horse can easily colic upon the reintroduction to food. Add the sand accumulated in her digestive tract which would need to be resolved, and that risk was escalated.

Her feet and teeth were attended to.

I met Cymple Rhythm (now called "Della") for the first time, less than two weeks later.

From the beginning, it was obvious that this was a very sweet mare.

I was honestly shocked when she was turned loose to wander freely for some additional photos, and Della offered this wonderful movement in her horrific condition. A glimpse of wonderful days to come.

Della has never looked back. She remains a sweet, forgiving, willing mare. She is healthy, healed, sound and beautiful. In a relatively short time, she was cleared to move from the rehabilitation phase in her rescue, and enter re-retaining in preparation for eventual adoption to a forever home.

Della is shown here with renowned equine artist Christine Picavet, one of the benefactors who made it possible to rescue Della:

She now walks, trots and canters both directions under saddle and has wonderful ground manners. She is versatile and able to go in any direction. Cymple Rhythm is now ready for and is offered for adoption to the right "forever" home.

Update to my 2009 Horses In Need submission:

We learned on January 20, 2015 that the very first equine personality that I met in 2009 through the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, Luis' Especial, has sadly passed.

His "Horses In Need" story can be found here:

RIP, Louie. Our thoughts are with you, and with your adoptive mom, Gay.
