A Nearby Farm, Part 1

Post by BarbYoung »

One December I noticed several new horses on a farm I drive by frequently. I was especially interested in a handsome gray Percheron type mare, as I am always looking for new models for my equine photography business. Later, I found out the gray mare, named Anna, was a PMU* mare, rescued from a slaughter truck.

In the next 2 years I watched Anna go from robust to lean to emaciated, and it became apparent that she and her fellows were not being adequately fed. Much of the time there was little to no hay in sight, and, in spite of many complaints, none of our local authorities appeared to do anything about the condition of the horses. (Colorado has really lousy humane laws.) Since Anna was in the worst condition, and I couldn’t stand to see her starving one more minute, I offered to adopt Anna myself. She came home with me in March.

First for Anna was to return her to health, starting with small, frequent meals gradually increasing in size and decreasing in frequency, and then a series of wormings once she was strong enough. She was so loaded with worms I could see them. Soon she began gaining weight on simply the amount of food normally fed to a horse of her size, age and breed.

The next priority was taming and haltering Anna, so her hooves could be trimmed and she could be more easily managed. Thus far she was untouchable. She was extremely smart and in her past life had learned every evasion tactic known to mare. Time and patience solved those issues after some time.

Several months later, after a full recovery and return to health, a lovely lady offered Anna a forever home with her other mare! Lexus had been boarding with me temporarily, and the two mares had become fast friends. Anna was turned out with her new friend on the 4th of July. Liberty!!!
