There are pampered show horses, and beloved backyard ponies. Loved by their people, and safe in a lifetime home.
Then there are those horses who through no fault of their own, fall through the cracks. Maybe they get old, or the kids go off to college, or just lose interest. Or they have an injury and are no longer suitable for the desired use. Maybe they were too slow on the racetrack, or didn't produce winning offspring. Maybe their owner dies, or lost a job. Or they simply become "unwanted".
These are the horses who wind up at highest risk for neglect, abuse....or in the slaughter pipeline.
I provide some photography services for a local, fully accredited all volunteer run 501(c) 3 and industry accredited rescue organization, that focuses on Thoroughbred horses. Their mission is to provide rescue, rehabilitation, re-training, and re-homing of Thoroughbreds bred and raised for racing, at this highest risk for slaughter, neglect and abuse. They rescue Thoroughbreds of all ages and from a multitude of backgrounds.
Following are summaries of a few of their success stories.

Re: Soft Landings and Happy Endings
"Boffi" surfaced on a "dealer" lot at the age of three. He was ID'd there and acquired by another rescue, and returned to previous connections who cared about him.
Thought to have been placed in a safe home, before his fifth birthday Boffi appeared again at a low-end auction, of interest to the same dealer. This time, he was ID'd and purchased for a mere $100 at auction by representatives of the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, bidding against the same feedlot.

He was eventually offered for adoption.
Third time is the charm; in 2013 the "unwanted" Boffi met his forever person. Jan and Boffi are a wonderful match and adore each other.

For those who may have read my submission from 2014, Cymple Rhythm is not a stranger.
In September of 2013, she appeared at a low-end auction. (She was actually saddled and ridden in the auction ring in this condition). Again representatives were at the auction, and outbid the feedlot.

This photo was taken about two weeks after her intake at the rescue. Besides the obvious neglect, she was found to have about 30 pounds of sand in her intestinal tract.

Under the care of the rescue, she quickly regained her weight and condition. She completed her rehab and was cleared by the vets to move on to re-training. She quickly showed that she loves her work and is proving to be athletic and quite versatile.

Re: Soft Landings and Happy Endings
The happy ending? This sweet mare found her forever home in 2015, adopted by Aislinn. Aislinn waited a long time for a horse of her own. These two have a terrific future in front of them.
