'Ollie' -One of the lucky ones

Post by debby »

Ollie is one of the lucky ones.

A Sherriff’s Office raid on a farm in Orange Virginia found six dead horses, one donkey, and many dogs, cats and chickens. Several more horse had to be euthanized.
80 horses were surrendered. Ollie was one of the horses left with no place to go. He was cared for by some loving people that couldn’t keep him indefinitely. They contacted the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at James River whose chapter works out of the James River Work Center. There the prisoners care for the rescued horses and develop job skills they can use on their release from prison. They are a small rescue with only room for 25-29 horses but found room to take him in.

When their racing career is over most leave the racetrack for an uncertain future. At risk for slaughter or abuse the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation rescues, rehabilitates, adopts or retires as many as their facilities and finances permit. Horses are checked by their veterinarian, and if possible, are retrained for new careers as pleasure, show or companion horses. The ones who aren’t adopted to new homes live out their lives in comfort at the farm cared for by the men. The TRF remains involved in the welfare of the adopted horses.

This year the TRF at James River and the Virginia Department of Corrections celebrates the ten year anniversary of their Second Chances Program. 39 horses have found new homes. 91 men have graduated from the ‘Groom Elite’ program. When released from prison some have become professional farriers, barn managers and grooms.

The TRF receives no funds from the prison or state and is funded entirely on donations. Volunteers devote time and energy. If you would like to help save the life of a Thoroughbred, please consider a donation. If you are interested there are many ways to be a part of this life changing program: go to their website and make a donation to horse care, sponsor a horse, adopt, and sign up for their e-mail newsletter.

Ollie (Oligopolist) raced 43 times and had 6 wins, 6 seconds and 6 thirds with earnings of $110,182. He is now in beautiful condition, sound for pleasure riding and occasional small jumps. He is so personable and his groom looks forward to spending time with him everyday.
