Crosswinds Equine Rescue - Solstice

Post by RLBoston »

Crosswinds Equine Rescue, Inc.(CWER) is a 501c3 nonprofit Illinois corporation and one of very few equine rescues that have applied for and earned an IL Animal Rescue Facility License, Class Equine. CWER, founded in 2003, is located in Sidell IL (east central IL, 90 minutes west of Indianapolis). CWER's driving focus is to rescue, rehab, retrain, and rehome at risk horses, whether that be from neglect or abuse, starvation or improper past training/equipment/care, giving them a 2nd chance at a successful relationship and life in our human-equine world.

Crosswinds Equine Rescue is verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries. Verification means that Crosswinds Equine Rescue meets the criteria of a true equine sanctuary/rescue and is providing humane and responsible care of the animals. To be awarded Verified status, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit and they must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles.

CWER’s board reaches from Pennsylvania to Nebraska, and focuses upon assisting animals that can benefit from our training and rehab focus, often taking ‘dangerous’ or ‘damaged’ horses and putting them on track to successful careers in showing, competing, or simply being a great partner at home to the right adopter. CWER pays zero salaries, even when providing training, farrier care and owner education to outside clients. All funds go to assisting the horses. More information http://www.cwer.org

One of the many successes is Sol. Here is the story of Sol as told by AnnMarie Cross. “The world brings the most interesting twists into your life, especially in rescue. We received a call that one of our adopter's health was failing, and she was asking to return her adopted horse but also the mare's companion... a 9 yo quarter horse gelding who had gone fully blind a few years' prior. We are not configured for or experienced with blind horses and in another situation would've helped the owner find a different option for the blind horse, but we felt a commitment to these owners, and so chose to accept the gelding we quickly renamed "Solstice" for "moving from the darkness into the light." We paired him with a foundered pony and enjoyed our time with him, but did not focus much on finding him a future. Then, a few months later, we were telling another adopter about this sweet, extremely inquisitive boy. How interesting, she mused, because her brother designs an electronic unit that allows dogs to visualize by echolocation - similar to a bat. would we like to talk with him? And so, BlindSight-E was born. With CWER's Mike Cross (formerly an aeronautic engineer) working with Paul Probst (an electronic engineering savant and the designer of BlindSIght), soon the canine unit was modified to meet an equine's prey-animal needs, and Solstice was learning to 'see' again ... the electronic device simply sends out a copy of the 3-wave sound a dolphin makes; and the animal's ears pick up the returning sound waves, the echoes. A little-used area of the brain takes the echolocation information, interprets it, and converts it into images in the mind -- just as in bats and even those blind humans who have learned to visualize by echolocation! (We have since been told that it is believed horses lose the needed hearing range at roughly age 15, and so horses over 15 will be unlikely to be able to use the unit.) Solstice was soon exploring not only his paddock and our arena, but his pasture and so much more in the world around him! He follows cats through the fields, teases the dogs, and easily manuevers around new equipment or new spaces with little difficulty. Sol is the first of now more than a dozen horses around the country to have the opportunity to visualize their world again, all thanks to the Jordy Canid Inc's Blindsight-E unit! CWER is incredibly proud to have had a chance to be a part in that leap! The BlindSight by @jordycanid. Now available http://www.jordycanid.com
