Crosswinds Equine Rescue - Merry Christmas! Needing Homes

Post by RLBoston »

There are so many good stories at Crosswinds I've just scratched the suface and gratitude is in order but there are some still needing homes so I'll try to squeeze a few more stories in here.

Crosswinds Equine Rescue, Inc.(CWER) is a 501c3 nonprofit Illinois corporation and one of very few equine rescues that have applied for and earned an IL Animal Rescue Facility License, Class Equine. CWER, founded in 2003, is located in Sidell IL (east central IL, 90 minutes west of Indianapolis). CWER's driving focus is to rescue, rehab, retrain, and rehome at risk horses, whether that be from neglect or abuse, starvation or improper past training/equipment/care, giving them a 2nd chance at a successful relationship and life in our human-equine world.

Crosswinds Equine Rescue is verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries. Verification means that Crosswinds Equine Rescue meets the criteria of a true equine sanctuary/rescue and is providing humane and responsible care of the animals. To be awarded Verified status, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit and they must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles.

CWER’s board reaches from Pennsylvania to Nebraska, and focuses upon assisting animals that can benefit from our training and rehab focus, often taking ‘dangerous’ or ‘damaged’ horses and putting them on track to successful careers in showing, competing, or simply being a great partner at home to the right adopter. CWER pays zero salaries, even when providing training, farrier care and owner education to outside clients. All funds go to assisting the horses. More information and horses available here: http://www.cwer.org

I first met Amaretto quite by accident stopping by Hummingbird Stables where she was being trained by Amy Nelson. I had stopped to photograph the Solstice Project for EPNET. Although this is a bw project I must include these blue eyes! You could take her home for Christmas! http://www.cwer.org/amaretto.html

In fall 2016, CWER received a phone call from a family who had taken Amaretto in from a bad situation. Sadly, they were losing their lease and could not keep her. Amaretto was underweight but apparently recovering from her prior owners' neglect. She had apparently been a solo horse for a long time and had no idea how to be a horse. it is unclear to us whether she was orphaned or just didn't have another horse in her life from being weaned or what else may have been different. to this day she prefers people over other horses. She has friends now, and knows how to be part of the herd and doesn't get picked on or pushed around. She's mostly a teenager now!

Dara was part of a very large ASPCA-National seizure in a northern state, where dozens of neglected horses and also dogs were seized. She was one of about six or seven large-boned mares all apparently exposed to the same warmbloodesque stallion around the same time period... based upon the fact that all foaled within a week or two of each other with very brightly marked, large-boned babies that looked 'nearly identical'. Despite the severe neglect, all foals were born healthy, and Dara soon began to gain weight under proper vet and farrier care. Dara was clearly alpha mare, and was aggressive and difficult to manage, but learning. CWER is very proud of having worked with the ASPCA on taking horses from two large seizure cases in the past - in both cases, some of the most challenging behavioral cases. Because of that track record, ASPCA National called CWER and asked us if we had room for Dara (then "Queenie") and Merlin (then "maverick"), or another large draft mare with trust issues. They were still fosters at this stage, and so we were unable to geld Merlin or take other significant steps with either horse. Now that we have ownership of both, Merlin will be gelded and Dara will have additional dental work done within the week. Timing is the most curious thing. CWER lost our two longest-tenured horses, both passing within one week of when Merlin and Dara arrived - Tessa, our mascot and ambassador Clydesdale, and Factor, a beloved aged racehorse who had also become something of a mascot. Both were best friends and also the personal companions of our founders, and each horse had been here over 10 years. Perhaps Merlin, or even Dara, will fill the void that Tessa has left behind, as CWER's lead mascot and event ambassador. Or perhaps they will choose other careers. Only time - and they - will tell us.

"Ani Le Dodi" is half-classically-bred-Arabian and half old-school-big-boned-saddlebred, and all personality. But when she came to Crosswinds Equine Rescue, she was 1/2 sorrow and 1/2 terror. Her former owner had hand bred the sire and dam to create first Rose then her full sister Dodi. They were hand raised, shown as youngsters, planned for a lifelong happy ownership. Then, life took a wrong turn. Their owner's health fell rapidly to Alzheimers, and her husband cared for the horses as best he could, but his focus was the wife. The two mares were essentially alone for several years. Finally the family could no longer care for them, and the sister called us and planned to bring the two mares to CWER. The wife had not recognized her horses as hers for YEARS, but the day sister came to bring them to us, she asked where her horses were going, with everyone in painful tears. Dodi arrived to us in good physical condition, but emotionally brutally herd bound to her sister and terrified of everything. We gave the girls several months to find their own way into our herd, make new friends, and now they show little to no attachment issues whatsoever. Dodi has a solid start under saddle, and would be an ideal project horse for someone looking for a bright, curious, forward, flashy mare!
