Cowboy Silhouette. I took this right after all the drive horses were turned out in their night pasture.

The Wranglers were trying to get all of the kinks out of the horses from their time in the the winter pastures before going to the Dude Ranches for the summer...

During the first morning of the Photography Workshop after a shoot with the horses running through the water, they were all resting back at the corrals and the steam from the sweaty horses was just wonderful.. I loved it. I wished that I had taken more. I think that this is one of my favorite shots.

On our first shoot day for the video group we had very cold and snowy weather. Yes, it was cold but we had a great time anyway and were rewarded with some snowy shots! We also got to work with Mark Bishop and the "Browns's Park Gang" which was a real treat. I think depsite the cold they had a ball riding for us.

What a Great Workshop - 2011 Sombrero Ranch & Horse Drive
Not having done much in the equine photography world before, I was very intrigued when I first learned of EPN's Sombrero Ranch Workshop and the Horse Drive. After reading the background and doing a little research, my expectations were fairly high on being able to be amongst horses, real ranch hands and in an exciting photo shooting environment. And, I hoped that I might even be able to catch sight of some of the wild Mustang horses that roam the open federal lands in Northeastern Colorado and Southwestern Wyoming.
I've been on numerous photography workshops, and they sometimes don't measure up to my standards, either for the setting, shooting opportunities, instruction, schedule or facilities. That sure wasn't the case here! This far exceeded even my best expectations. I cannot think of anything more in the way of shooting, action and of course, wonderful animals in such an authentic Western setting that I could have asked for.
There was no shortage of helpful technical guidance, tutoring, discussions (topics: digital workflow, what equine clients look for, business Q&A, etc.), and even a very good critique. Carien did a masterful job of organizing this event.
I’ll be sending in my reservation for next year right away.

As we waited on the hill, the distant dust cloud formed, then the herd could be made out, tiny at first, then looming larger on the road. Then they hit the bridge and spread out for the last leg on Day 1 of the Drive. Wish I'd had the wider lens, or maybe next year try a remote closer shot.

Not all of the Sombrero workhorses are equine...these guys have had their share of work too.

I like trying motion blur sometimes...seems to speak of the speed and pure art of a horse running through water.

Took a side day-trip from Sombrero, north to the Pilot Butte Scenic Wild Horse Loop (Wyoming). Can't we just leave the mustangs here!
