Sundance was seized from his owner along with this mare approximately six weeks ago. Both the foster home and the organization that are now caring for them have asked to remain anonymous until the court case has been resolved.
Sundance, believed to be about 25 years old, is making great progress. He has already gained a total of 50 lbs in the six week since his rescue, thanks to the kindness and care he now receives in his new foster home.
When Sundance was rescued he scored 1, the lowest rating, on the Henneke Scale. After six weeks of care he now scores 2 on the scale. He has a long way to go. The mare was slightly better scoring a 2 on intake.
Sundance must be fed four times a day and is receiving care from a vet who generously offers a discount to the rescue organization. He is blind in his right eye due to neglect and his legs are badly scarred from barbed wire. Sundance has received dental care through the organization funds. He still needs to gain 200 lbs.
The rescue group relies on donations and volunteers to care for these horses. Besides feeding them, they also need veterinary care. While there are a few vets willing to offer discounts, these horses will require a lot of care due to neglect and abuse.
The foster family caring for Sundance has been volunteering to care for abused and neglected horses for five years. I would like to thank her and her family for all the hard work they do and for taking the time to share their story with me.
If you see a horse that is being abused or neglected, contact your local animal control office.
Contributions can be made to your local horse rescue organization.

Jeanine, thank you for sharing Sundance's story. I hope this group can get the help they need to continue helping horses.
