Cannington Horse Rescue

Post by Dorothy »

Cannington Horse Rescue is a non profit horse rescue located in Little Britian, Ontario. Maureen Johnston and her family have been saving and re-homing over 200 horses since 2001. Currently there are approximately 22 horses in their care. The horses are available for adoption and they will live out the rest of their lives there. When I spoke with Maureen about her rescue I had asked her how these wonderful experiences began. Here is her story.

This is Star. Maureen’s first horse rescue. She had heard about Star from a local horse farm in Newmarket, Ontario. The farm was rehabilitating him after his suspensories in his hind legs had dropped. This tragedy happened after being at horse show at the CNE. The original owner wanted to get rid of him because of his injuries. They were specifically told to get rid of him. The groomers took him to a farm in Newmarket where he was rehabilitated to walk trot canter. Even though Star was rehabilitated, he began going downhill because he had no one to call his own. That’s when Maureen came to the rescue. Star was approximately 15-17 years of age when she got him. Her daughter Valerie and her brother Eric learned to ride on Star immediately. Star will live out the remainder of his life at Cannington as his suspensors are not doing well. He is approximately 22 years old now and is very happy to have a place to be loved and taken care of.

Meet Danny, a 10-15 year old Belgian about 16 hands high. Danny was rescued along with his teammate Aaron. Both horses suffered from extreme malnutrition and the vet told Maureen that Danny would be lucky to make it through the night. He has been slowly recovering but is doing very well. Danny has also been adopted and will be picked up by his new family shortly.

Rain is an Appaloosa whose is approximately 8 years old. Originally, Rain was ran through an Olex Auction.
The individual that purchased her found out that she was not trained to ride so he decided to punish her for that reason.
A young girl witnessed the owner beating Rain under a tarp with a chain. She immediately called Maureen. Maureen came
out to Guelph where the horse was and advised the owner that she would come back to take her. She was very stern about
the owner not touching her again. When Maureen returned later to take Rain home, she had welts on her body from being
beaten with the chain. Rain is doing well now and is considered to be “boss mare” here at Cannington.

This is Heideprinz and Fancy. Both horses were owned by a lady in Calgary who had become sick with cancer and unfortunately succumbed to her disease. She had paid for her horse’s board for a year in advance upon learning that she was sick and approximately two weeks before the board ran out, her daughter received a phone call to find out what she would do with her mother’s horses. The horses were going to be shipped to the Olex Auction. Her daughter did not want to see that happen to her mother’s horses so she came back to Guelph where they had originally lived to try to find them a home. Unfortunately, they were not successful in selling Prinz and Fancy. Maureen’s friend in Guelph could not look after them, so they came to live with Maureen. Heideprinz is a trakhener who was born on March 26, 1981. He was a grand prix and pre st. George dressage. He is now 28 years old and in good health. Fancy is a Quarter Horse and is 34 years old. They will both live out the remainder of their lives at Cannington.

Maureen has also worked with Janet Burts of Alaska, USA, the Bureau of Land Management of the USA and Rockhaven Rescue of Grafton, Ontario to relocate and adopt 33 mustangs from the United States. There is legislation in the United States that was passed called the Burns Amendment which allows any mustang over 10 years of age to be taken for slaughter or sold for any other reason. There are horses being shipped off by the truck loads. Twenty-eight of the 33 mustangs that were adopted to Canada were pregnant mares. Cannington Horse Rescue has 6 of those mustangs. Utah is a 14 year old mustang mare. Utah gave birth to a colt named Shelby who also lives at Cannington Rescue. He is now three years old and Valerie is breaking him in to ride. He is quite the cheeky personality and is a very personable horse. Mayleah is a 12 year old mustang mare that came from the states and gave birth to a filly. Her name is Faytiun. She too is very cute and personable.

Here at Cannington Horse Rescue, none of the horses will ever go to slaughter. This is their final resting place until its time to cross Rainbow Bridge. All of these horses have a story to be told and are among the lucky ones that get a second chance at life. They have finally been saved by uncertainty. Like many rescue organizations, it takes money and donations to help them continue to do their work and take care of these animals. Cannington Horse Rescue is solely funded by their owners. Donations of horse feed, blankets, halters, deworming medication and hay are greatly appreciated as these are some of the necessities for the horses well being. Donations can be made to Cannington Horse Rescue at Sunderland Feed in Sunderland, Ontario. In the trying times we all experience in our uncertain economy, it may not seem possible to donate. But every little bit helps to keep this rescue going. Without the care and generosity of Maureen and her family to take on such a huge task, there would be no place for unwanted, abandoned, abused, injured or starved horses to reside. These beautiful horses did not ask to have been put in these awful and unlivable situations. Please consider doing your part and help out where you can. Thank you!

This is Heideprinz and Valerie. Unfortunately, sometimes when an owner dies and there is no one to take them, they end up at horse auctions or feed lots. Heideprinz was one of the lucky ones who did not. He is living out his life with Fancy, the quarter horse that the owner also owned and both horses will live out their lives at Cannington.
