Hello everyone - I photographed this organization this winter - soon after the mares and foals arrived here. A number of babies have been foaled this Spring. But I felt I wanted to document the beginnings of their rescue.

The animals are from ranchers in North Dakota & Alberta, Canada who provide pregnant mare urine for the Premarin industry.Basically the ranches are going belly up and can’t afford to feed their animals this winter. Their stock (mostly mares & foals) is being liquidated and headed to auctions…we all know where that leads. The website for Aspen Valley Horses Rescue: http://www.aspenvalleyhorserescue.org

What is especially interesting is that this organization just started up in late fall 2009 - in response to the organization founders hearing about this dire situation. Our entire community responded enthusiastically.

I'm told that's so they can easily catch one of the yearlings - it's interesting - in all the time I was there - not one of them got tangled in their own or another's lead

A nice piece, Roberta. I agree about the b&w images. Many women still have no idea where their Premarin comes from, and how disposable these mares and their foals are. It's heartwarming to see these mares and foals enjoying being horses again. Thanks for doing this project.

fyi - two weeks ago, three mares some how got out of their pasture and ran to Basalt Mountain (nearby) we were all in a panic for their safety (mountain lions, etc)
But I will tell you that just about every horse person in the valley went up there and searched and one grou of riders found them within a few days - definitely a miracle
