Everyone is focused on the plight of the wild horses out west, yet the slowly vanishing Colonial Spanish Mustangs on the Outer Banks of North Carolina are virtually ignored. If you don't live in the mid-Atlantic region, you have probably never heard of them. The mustangs, or Banker Horses, have been there for 500 years but perhaps for not much longer if we don't step up and help them. Here is my project:

Re: Corolla Wild Horses
Susan,
This is excellently done, and very informative. You're right, I had never heard of the Banker horses. A sad story, which seems to point out that man does not learn from his past mistakes, but goes on to repeat them on even grander scales, animals and anything of nature that is inconvenient to their purposes being eradicated mercilessly.
Your photos are excellent, and really makes me want to visit the area and see these horses before they're gone completely.

Thanks, Diana. In this day and age it surprised me to find such disregard for environmental issues. We don't seem capable of learning from the past.

Well done article. I think the final photo, with the sparse vegetation and the horse looking at you is poignant and says what you can't tactfully say yourself.

Excellent Susan, informative, thought provoking and poignant. I had the pleasure to see and photograph at Corolla last year, it amazes me that more people don't know about these horses and their plight. Thank you.
