With last year's Horses In Need project, I featured some horses who had new chapters in their lives that were just starting to take shape, beginning with their rescue by the volunteers with the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue (http://www.sctbrescue.org) This year, I thought that I would provide some brief updates on some of those horses.
Here is Katie. For those who may not have read her initial story, she appeared in a low end auction after a racing career, had a foal, then returned to the racetrack once again. Sometime later, she wound up in a private home, before being brought to the auction in 2009. She was purchased by the feedlot/kill buyer. Volunteers with the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue were able to negotiate a 48 hour reprieve for her, and ultimately were able to rescue her from the feedlot.
Katie was very thin, with whip wounds evident, and was not very trusting. Because of her condition, she went to a foster home within the network of the Southern California Thoroughbred rescue for her initial rehab. Here are images from just after her rescue, two weeks into her quarantine and rehab. She had already gained about 100 pounds at that time.

Katie has since been restored to a healthy weight, her wounds have healed, she is recovering from the apparent abuse, is so much more affectionate and trusting of the people around her - and she is definatly enjoying life!

Percy:
When I wrote about Percy, he had suffered an injury. He later wound up at a low end auction where he was purchased by a feedlot/kill buyer. The Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue was successful in purchasing him from the feedlot/kill buyer and securing his future.
Because of his injury, his prognosis was uncertain at that time.

This extremely handsome horse has been under saddle again and is being ridden on the trails while at the rescue. He is now available for adoption, ready for his "forever" home.

These are just two of the horses that I have been privileged to meet through the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue.
They were at risk - and they found a soft landing.
