Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation, Inc. - Meet Abby

Post by allthehorses »

The Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation, Inc. (MHWF) is dedicated to providing qualified homes for any horse in need. There are a wide variety of needs for horses, especially in the current economy and state of the horse market. MHWF’s goal is to make certain that every horse placed in their care is provided with all the necessary ingredients for a safe and happy life, and that it is also protected from those who would do it harm.

MWHF is a horse adoption and rescue program, so along with the very nice, sound healthy horses that come into the program from owners who could just no longer keep their horse, they also work with the authorities and take in severe neglect and abuse cases. Meet Abby, she was severely neglected and came to MHWF from a neighboring county when the authorities seized her.

Abby’s first day in the very cold month of February in Wisconsin.

Abby came to the safe haven of MHWF at a body condition score of less than 2. That very thick, wooly hair did cover some of her bones, but they were too prominent to be hidden completely. Thankfully a concerned citizen saw her condition as passing by and reported her to the local sheriff’s department.

Upon arrival to the Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation (MHWF), Abby is given a complete examination by a veterinarian. Abby is aged to approximately 20 years old and in need of a good teeth floating. Luckily Abby has good solid teeth present, so once she is floated and rehabilitated she should be able to maintain her good health on a normal, healthy diet with no particular special needs. MHWF has a lot of experience in re-feeding the starved horse and have successfully rehabilitated many horses over the years.

Abby started gaining weight fairly quickly over the following weeks. The Wisconsin winters can be long and brutal, but Abby will never again feel the pains of starvation, she is now safe and on her way to being healthy.

Here Abby has been with MHWF for just over a month and has gone up in body score to almost a 4 in mid March.

By the time April rolled around Abby was really filling out and finally starting to lose that horribly wooly hair with healthy, shiny hair emerging. All of her skin problems including the lice she had when she arrived have been resolved.

Into May Abby is restored to health and in good weight, so it is time to evaluate what she knows so that they can evaluate what type of home Abby will need. Abby does perfect under saddle, knows her cues well and has lots of energy.

The best part of these rescue stories from Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation are the happy endings, and I am happy to report that Abby found the perfect home towards the end of May. Such a long way this girl came from February to May. She is now happy and healthy in a home with a few other horses and goes for the occasional trail ride. Here is Abby with her happy adopter on adoption day at MHWF.
