Horses of the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue

Post by tma »

Once again, I found it so very hard to focus on just one or two of the special horses who reside at the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue (http://www.sctbrescue.org). Each is so deserving in their own way.

Through no fault of their own, in one way or another, each of these horses "fell through the cracks" finding themselves in a high risk situation for entering the slaughter "pipeline".

Despite the downturn in the economy resulting in a marked drop in donations, and with adoptions in 2010 at a pace of just one-third of those in 2009, the rescue has managed to provide a "safety net" for the 32 horses within it's network at the time of this writing.

Following are brief summaries of some of the horses that I have been fortunate to meet-

First, meet Lyon.

Lyon is a sweet ten year old. This handsome gelding was a stakes-placed racehorse; then he sustained multiple soft tissue injuries. After a lengthy rehabilitation he has been cleared by the veterinarian for flat, light riding. He has yet to be re-started under saddle, but is now offered for adoption to the special home that can offer appropriate re-training.

"Bear" was purchased from a feedlot/kill buyer to prevent him from shipping to slaughter. At the age of 24, he has clearly had many years of additional training since his 15 starts on the racetrack. He was thin at the time he was rescued, but gained weight quickly and looks wonderful. He has proven to be very healthy, is sound, has a strong work ethic, and is ready now for a loving home in which to spend his remaining years.

"Mysterious" is a beautiful four year old filly. Nothing is known about her background other than she was purchased by the feedlot/kill buyer and rescued by SCTBR. It's a bit of an unusual story, but when SCTBR volunteers went to rescue another bay Thoroughbred mare from the feedlot, Mysterious joined the herd at the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue as well.

She is a wonderful mover and is starting under saddle - she is available for adoption now. She is expected to excel as a sport horse, or dressage mount.

Benjamin raced once as a five year old. With an old, set bowed tendon, Ben later turned up at auction and was bid on by a feedlot/kill buyer, who was outbid by SCTR volunteers. Ben has been in rehabilitation and earlier this year cleared a lameness examination. The vet does not expect the old bow to affect his huge stride, or future athletic potential.

"Xena" raced once as a three year old before being purchased at auction by a feedlot/kill buyer for $ 75. SCTR was successful in negotiating the purchase of this sweet, athletic filly from that feedlot/kill buyer.

She is ready to re-start under saddle and is available to the right adopter.

"Dancer" was purchased at auction to prevent her from going to the kill buyer. Although she never actually raced, she did have offical "works" on the racetrack.

She is available for adoption and is expected to be a nice sport horse and/or dressage prospect.

Deltamax came to SCTR by way of the auction, where the feedlot/kill buyer bid on him.

He was very underweight and with both a racing related leg injury and a neck injury due to either a bite or a kick, which temporarily made eating and swallowing difficult. He is making progress in rehab but is not yet available for adoption.

He is pictured here a couple of months after his rescue with SCTR volunteer, Megan.

These are but a few of the horses that have found a "soft landing" when they fell through the cracks - thanks to the efforts of the dedicated volunteers of the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue.
