Begin Again Horse Rescue: "One by One"

Post by Carien Schippers »

Last year I was contacted by a long time client who in a previous life had bred and shown many world class miniature horses. I had photographed her horses on many occasions over the years but had fallen out of touch. When she contacted me I learned she had retired from the world of miniature horses only to create an all volunteer run rescue group called Begin Again Horse Rescue located in Lima, New York and would I be willing to come take some photos of available horses.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a safe, permanent, environment for unwanted, “at risk” and neglected horses to prevent as many as possible from suffering or going to slaughter. We will rehabilitate them when possible and find “permanent lease” homes for them. We will also promote non-cruelty to animals by focusing efforts on raising awareness and providing information to the public concerning the nature and proper care of horses and the plight these animals face.

What We Stand For

Begin Again Horse Rescue, Inc. is a temporary place of rest and recuperation for horses found to be neglected or abused. Located in Lima, New York, our founding members have many years invested in the care and well being of their own animals. We DO NOT sell horses, but facilitate the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of those animals in our care. We strive to find as many loving, informed homes for as many animals as possible. We are 100% volunteer run and operate solely on donations. We will accept animals in any condition, when space allows, who are surrendered by private owners or through county animal control facilities. We focus our attentions on those within a two hour drive from the farm.

I visited BAHR in July on the same day that several horses had arrived at the rescue. These horses had been headed for the kill pen and were lucky enough to be saved by volunteers that attended the auction.
This photo is of a 13 year old Thoroughbred named is Krisco Kid that had been shipped to the sale.

Krisco Kid was born in California, had 105 starts and was last raced at Finger lakes in '06. His career earnings were $157,152.
This tag on the forehead means the horse has no Coggins Test. If a buyer isn’t willing to pay for this test, the horse goes to the horse meat buyer and to slaughter

A thorough vet checkup by GVEC and An evaluation ride by Jen Lilly of Bristol Valley Training Center showed that The Kid is healthy, a gentleman, attentive and willing to do whatever you ask. Though he has a fused ankle as a result of his 102 racing starts in his 13 years, he has no pain.
The happy ending to this story is that The Kid was adopted and now has a loving home.

Yes, this story had a happy ending but unfortunately many thousands of horses are not so lucky. Every week at many sales around the country "Killer buyers" attend auctions and fill their trucks with unwanted horses headed for slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico. Many of these horses are still sound and healthy and have been dumped for a variety of reasons. The rescues and sanctuaries can handle only so many horses but most of them are full beyond capacity. The slaughter buyers will still be there as long as there is a demand, however we as horse people can affect the supply if we are willing to get involved and spread the word about horses in danger of ending up at these sales. One good example of this kind of group effort can be seen here: http://www.equinephotographers.org/4um/ ... 83&t=14212

What can we do?
Education for all horse owners and resposibilty for that horse's life is a good start. Be aware of the costs of keeping and maintaining a horse, including worst case vet scenarios.
Be willing to humanely euthanize your horse that is old, sick or crippled.
Be willing to care for a horse it's entire life if you are going to breed.
Support people on the front lines that are working at rescuing unwanted horses.
Photographing horses in need and using our images to document them is a great way to help. In addition, the internet is a great way to spread the word about specific horses in need and organizing transport for them.

WOW - what a well-written article. Interesting - Temple Grandin was on Extreme Makeover - Home Edition a couple weeks ago (autistic children in family).

Thanks for sharing.
