Changing Leads Equine Rescue is a 501c3 organization located in Kansas City, Missouri, dedicated to educating horse owners and equine enthusiasts and rescuing abused, neglected and abandoned horses. The rescue provides a safe and peaceful environment where children and families can experience the pleasure of equine activities while at the same time gaining knowledge about the responsibility of maintaining and caring for a horse during the rehabilitative process with each rescued horse. Our adoptive network service enables us to unite each rescued horse with a qualified adoptive family to continue providing the care, love and support needed to complete the healing for each horse.
Currently, Changing Leads is home to six rescues including two retired thoroughbred racehorses.
Overnight Edition aka “Momma”, by Far Out East, is about 15 years old and raced eight times. She arrived at our rescue in 2009 with her filly, Friday’s Edition. Friday’s Edition has since been adopted, but Overnight Edition is still waiting for a forever home.
This well-mannered chestnut mare’s pedigree includes Bold Ruler, Secretariat’s sire, and Native Dancer, one of the most celebrated racehorses in history. Her full pedigree can be found at: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/overnight+edition.
Overnight Edition would make a wonderful companion horse and is currently available for adoption. Her adoption fee is $500, pending approval from Changing Leads.
The second Thoroughbred at Changing Leads is Top Park, a 1998 brown Thoroughbred mare, registered with the Jockey Club. She also raced in the past and is 14 years, 14.3 hands.
Top Park’s story is much different than Overnight Edition’s. After her racing career ended, Top Park ended up in the Midwest, where she was purchased at an auction by a buyer who was going to take her to slaughter (1). A rescue organization purchased Top Park from this buyer and started the rehabilitation process with this beautiful mare. She then changed ownership once more before arriving at Changing Leads in Summer 2011.
Top Park is broke to ride and her adoption fee is $850, pending approval from Changing Leads. She loves people and is very smart. Ideally she would do very well with a rider she could bond with and be challenged by.
