Changing Leads Equine Rescue is a 501c3 organization located in Kansas City, Missouri, dedicated to educating horse owners and equine enthusiasts and rescuing abused, neglected and abandoned horses. The rescue provides a safe and peaceful environment where children and families can experience the pleasure of equine activities while at the same time gaining knowledge about the responsibility of maintaining and caring for a horse during the rehabilitative process with each rescued horse. Our adoptive network service enables us to unite each rescued horse with a qualified adoptive family to continue providing the care, love and support needed to complete the healing for each horse.

Currently, Changing Leads is home to six rescues including Joe Black, a Percheron gelding who towers at 18.2 hands. Joe Black came to Changing Leads in August 2011.

Unfortunately, he was very underweight and had about 700 pounds to gain when he arrived. The photo above shows him enjoying one of his first meals at our rescue.

After a few weeks, our gentle giant had slowly but surely started gaining some much-needed weight. And with his friendly, outgoing personality, he quickly became a favorite with volunteers and visitors.

This is Joe Black's second rescue during his lifetime, as he was initially rescued at four months old from a PMU farm in Canada. To provide a little background, PMU stands for "Pregnant Mare's Urine." This urine is used to manufacture Premarin, a female hormone replacement. Sadly, the foals born to these mares are a by-product of the industry and many have simply been sent to slaughter.

We are so glad Joe Black has a "second chance" so to speak. Although he still has about 200 pounds to gain, here are a few pictures of him looking healthier in December 2011:

Joe Black is not available for adoption yet, since he still has additional weight to gain and we need to assess his dietary needs going forward.
