Still Winners

Post by tma »

Many believe that the horses who wind up in the slaughter pipeline are those who are unregistered. Or old. Or lame. Or ill bred. Or injured.

Through my time working with the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue (www.sctbrescue.org) , I've learned that this belief is not always correct.

This project's focus is on the reality.

A $200,000 yearling, a year later whis handsome gelding could not be purchased at auction for $325,000. This bid was not enough to meet the reserve placed on him.

He then raced 36 times - including a start in a Grade 2 stake - and earned $88,000. By Unbridled and from a Saratoga Six mare, he is beautifully bred.
Yet he ultimately wound up at a low end livestock auction. He was rescued from a well known meat buyer, who had bought him at that auction for a mere $175.

Lola_4821 copy2.jpg

"Lola" is an unnamed but registered daughter of Motto. She never raced, was never on the racetrack and is pretty, healthy, and sound. She was rescued at auction, bidding against a meat buyer; removed from the risk of shipping out of state to slaughter, for $225.

Blackjack111117w_0132.jpg

"Blackjack" is a very well bred five year old gelding, approximately 16 hands, has a big, powerful, elastic stride, is very athletic, and has tons of potential for flat sport, showing and pleasure disciplines. Blackjack was retired from racing in 2009 and has since spent time under western tack.

In April 2011, Blackjack showed up at a low end livestock auction, where he was bid on by the meat buyer. The cost to give him another chance at life: $275.

Chitty_3357 copy.jpg

"Chitty" is incredibly bred; by Saint Ballado from a Danzig mare, she was auctioned with her papers. She was rescued at auction for $180, when a kill buyer tried to buy her.

"Bertrando", by leading sire Bertrando and out of a Candy Stripes mare, sold to a kill buyer for $200. He was subsequently rescued. Despite having COPD and being a "roarer", he has been cleared by a veterinarian for a second career. He has since been restarted under saddle and is suitable for flat / light pleasure riding.

"Dancer" is a beautiful six year old mare. Although she never actually raced, she officially "worked" at the track. She is completely sound. Yet at the age of 3, to prevent her from shipping out of state to slaughter, rescue volunteers bid $125 against the kill buyer.

All of the horses shown here, got lucky. They were found, identified and rescued, by volunteers from the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue. Many other horses of many breeds and crosses with similar stories, are not so lucky.

The Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue (SCTR) is an all volunteer run, registered 501(c)(3) charity with a mission to rescue thoroughbred horses, bred and raised for racing, from slaughter, neglect, and abuse. The Rescue is run entirely by volunteers.

The work the rescue does in rehabilitating, re-training and re-homing these rescued thoroughbreds is driven by the philosophy that all of them - whether they ever raced, whether they raced competitively or not, whether they were successful or not in the breeding shed, and no matter what their condition when they are rescued - they are "Still Winners".

For more information about these horses, and others with the Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, please go to their web site: http://www.sctbrescue.org
